This fellowship is for exceptional educators committed to a just and inclusive civic democracy built on the full truths of American history.

Dr. Yohuru Williams is the 2023-2024 Institute for Common Power We the People Public Scholar Fellow. Dr. Williams is a Professor of History and Founding Director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas.

This fellowship is for exceptional educators committed to a just and inclusive civic democracy built on the full truths of American history. Dr. Williams is a highly worthy recipient because of his superb scholarly research on the Modern Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, as well as race in America; his outstanding teaching record; his exemplary commitment to experiential learning and public service with diverse communities across the nation. It is our honor to recognize and support him as a public scholar who embodies a deep and wide commitment to civic health.

As part of this fellowship, Dr. Williams will engage with the Institute for Common Power in these ways:

• Participate in the planning and execution of one Institute for Common Power Initiative or program (Teach-In for Truth and American Democracy) with Director, Dr. Terry Anne Scott, and other members of the Institute for Common Power.

• Serve as an Advisor to CP Future’s Action Academy program. It is a two-month, high-impact practice program focused on voting rights, civic engagement, and an inclusive democracy that CP Future offers yearly to selected college students across the nation.

• Provide two lectures for Action Academy over the course of the summer of 2023.

• Work with the Institute for Common Power Senior Program Manager, Dr. Devon Geary, on educator alumni support.
